Biography
Heidi Stanfield

The chronology of my life is remembered by the houses in which I have lived, more than fifty houses, in six countries, and eight states. This continuous moving, never living anywhere longer than 18 months, allowed for the possibility of reinventing myself almost yearly. A continuous opening of new doors to explore what new life was awaiting me.

This lifestyle helps to develop a deeper understanding and curiosity of different peoples, cultures, and living conditions, however it does not nourish a sense of community within oneself. It breeds self-reliance but not connectedness, aloneness without being lonely. My parents also had the odd habit of leaving everything behind with each move bringing the age-old concept of "you can't take it with you" to a very tangible level.

So what happens when this type of "free spirit" tries to settle down, "disaster"! My work reflects an expression of not "fitting" into the norm of societal definitions of happiness or normalcy. A house became a prison - a place- out of place.

Escape (when there is a problem, start over) became a ranch 90 miles from the grocery store. Thus began the opening of more doors, only this time there was nowhere else to go but inward. A cute card caught my eye, which said, "Last year I went around the world. This year I am going someplace else." After a very long period of dormancy - hibernation, a rebirth finally burst forth. Creativity erupted with manic intensity.

My work deals with the themes created by my life - doors leading to otherness - places, thoughts, perspectives, awareness, times, opportunities, losses, lives, meanings. My artistic development began with an affinity for three dimensions thus my inability to be confined to a two dimensional surface. This is what I call thinking "inside the box."

In all aspects of life, more always lies beneath the surface. The opening of new doors, the curiosity to understand more, is always an exciting adventure.

I sincerely hope to arouse the curiosity of the viewer to look a little deeper, to question, and engage in a thought dialogue.
